Disguised as a gem dealer, Charles travels with his girlfriend Marie-Andrée Leclerc (Jenna Coleman) through Thailand, Nepal and India in 1975 and 1976. On their trip they commit a series of crimes, while Charles becomes the prime suspect in a series of brutal murders of young travelers on the so-called Hippie Trail.
From then on, Chalres Sobhraj finds himself on the run from law enforcement around the globe, eluding authorities time and again. Meanwhile, the junior diplomat at the Dutch Embassy in Bangkok, Herman Knippenberg (Billy Howle), gets caught up in a criminal conspiracy.
