Background & info on The Lord of the Rings series
In November 2017, Amazon secured the rights to J.R.R. Tolkien’s novel after long negotiations and then announced a conversion in the form of a series with a spin-off option. However, this is not a remake of Peter Jackson’s feature films. Instead, the series functions as a prequel and adds new facets to the familiar fantasy world.
The showrunners are Patrick McKay and John D. Payne, who were previously only involved as writers on Star Trek Beyond – although they are not listed as such in the credits. The Lord of the Rings series thus marks the first major project they’ve helmed on their own. July 2018 also saw the announcement of the director of the first two episodes: J.A. Bayona.
He delivered with Jurassic World 2: The Fallen Kingdom and before that – just like Peter Jackson at the time before The Lord of the Rings – gained experience primarily in the horror genre, not to mention dealing with special effects. The series will be shot in New Zealand, which was also the home of the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit films. A new addition is Scotland as the backdrop for Middle Earth. (MH)
