Background & info to The King’s Man
The King’s Man – The Beginning is the third film in the series after Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014) and Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle (2017) and was once again directed by Matthew Vaughn.
Instead of immediately shooting another sequel, which was already in the works with Kingsman 3, the director first decided to tell the back story of the battle-trained Secret Service in The King’s Man.
Like the previous Kingsman films, the prequel is based on the Kingsman comic book series by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons. While the comic book world shares a universe with the Kick-Ass stories, this is not the case in the film.
The King’s Man – The Beginning reunited Matthew Vaughn with actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson, with whom he had already filmed the first Kick-Ass movie. The actor had previously been offered the role of Gary “Eggsy” Unwin for Kingsman, but turned it down. Now he plays Lee Unwin’s father.
The King’s Man was postponed and delayed several times. After originally being scheduled for a November 2019 theatrical release, the Corona pandemic prevented the film from opening in February and then September 2020, eventually moving it to 2021. (ES)
