Complete Storyline and information about The Father
Anthony (Anthony Hopkins) is now at a stately age, but has his pride when it comes to outside assistance. Although his daughter Anne (Olivia Colman) would like to provide him with a caregiver, he refuses any help. But he doesn’t want to leave his longtime apartment in London either. And this despite the fact that his memory is failing more and more frequently. Nevertheless, he thinks he can manage on his own.
But then Anne announces to her father that she wants to move to France with her new partner: she wants to gain a new foothold in Paris. This opening surprises Anthony immensely. After all, if his daughter has a new boyfriend, he can’t explain who the man in his apartment is who claims to have been in a marriage with Anne for ten years. Increasingly confused, Anthony begins to doubt his perception of reality and his relationship with his closest relatives.
Background & Info on The Father
With The Father, French author Florian Zeller made his feature film debut. The drama is based on his own stage play The Father (Le Père), which premiered in Paris in 2012 and won several awards. It was later seen on stages around the world from New York to London to Germany. The play is part of a loose trilogy that also includes Die Mutter (La Mère, premiered in 2010) and The Son (Der Sohn/Le Fils, premiered in 2018).
Florian Zeller’s goal with his work was to let the audience participate in a direct experience of dementia. Especially since most only witness life with dementia from the outside through examples of their aging and increasingly confused relatives.
The Father had its world premiere in January 2020 at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2021, the film racked up six Oscar nominations: for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role and Best Supporting Actress (Olivia Colman), Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing, and Best Production Design. In the end, the work won 2 Academy Awards: for Best Actor (Anthony Hopkins) and Best Script. (ES)
