Complete Storyline and information about The Eyes of Tammy Faye
Jim (Andrew Garfield) and his glamorous wife Tammy Faye Bakker (Jessica Chastain) are successful and popular as televangelists in the 1970s in the USA. Tammy Faye, in particular, wows the masses with her flamboyant appearance and engaging personality. At the height of their career, the couple owns the world’s largest religious TV channel as well as a Christian theme park.
Tammy Faye’s message is one of love and acceptance towards people of diverse walks of life, of which (unlike many other Christian preachers) she does not exclude queer people. In addition, she is revered for her idiosyncratic singing and for her extraordinary eyes and eyelashes.
This makes it all the more upsetting for many when a scandal shakes the reputation of the Bakker couple. Financial inconsistencies and rivals lurking for their opportunity further ensure that the carefully built empire of the tele-evangelists begins to totter.
Background & Info on The Eyes of Tammy Faye
As a biopic, The Eyes of Tammy Faye is based on the real life of Tamara Faye Messner (1942-2007), born Tamara Faye LaValley, in between Tamara Faye Bakker. Together with her husband Jim Bakker, she first ran a puppet TV show with marionettes. In 1974, they founded the televangelist program The PTL Club, which gained great notoriety. PLT stands for Praise The Lord and People That Love, respectively. In 1978, the Christian theme park Heritage USA followed.
In 1989, Tammy Faye’s husband, Jim Bakker, was indicted, convicted and jailed on several charges of fraud and conspiracy. His spouse divorced and married Roe Messner in 1992. In 2007, she died of cancer.
Actress Jessica Chastain personally sang her covers of Tammy Faye songs for her role in The Eyes of Tammy Faye. (ES)
