Complete Storyline and information about Promising Young Woman.
In the past, 30-year-old Cassandra Thomas (Carey Mulligan) was always dubbed as a promising young woman by everyone. But then a terrible event throws her life and future off track. Afterwards Cassie shows herself to be without any ambitions, gives up her medical studies, lives at home with her parents again and works as a barista in Gail’s (Laverne Cox) café.
But not everything is as it seems, because Cassie is in fact still full of drive. She leads a double life at night. She gets her revenge by teaching men who cross her path a lesson. She hopes to heal her trauma and make up for the injustices of the past. It’s not until her former classmate Ryan (Bo Burnham) enters her life that she is offered the chance of a fresh start. But her biggest confrontation is yet to come for Cassie.
Background & Info on Promising Young Woman
Promising Young Woman translates as “a young woman with a promising future.” The film owns its title as a reference to Brock Turner, a student, Stanford University, who was convicted of sexual assault in 2016 and yet continued to be described by many as a “promising young man” afterwards.
Actress Emerald Fennell made her directorial debut with Promising Young Woman and also wrote the screenplay herself. The first scene that popped into her head was a woman lying on a bed while someone else took off her pants and asked her “What are you doing?” – once while drunk and once while completely sober. She built her idea on that. The scene can also be seen in the finished film.
In 2021, Promising Young Woman received five Oscar nominations: for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress in a Leading Role, Best Editing and Best Screenplay. (ES)
