Complete plot and information about Old
It’s perfect weather to spend a relaxing vacation day on a tropical beach. The secluded bay with its steep cliffs is the ideal destination for a family, a young couple and a few tourists to feel the sand under their toes and watch the life in the tide pools.
But the paradisiacal place quickly turns out to be a nightmare: first a woman’s body washes up from the crystal clear waters, and then accelerated aging sets in among those present, especially the children. As the years tumble by every half hour, fear grows, for there is apparently no way to escape the bay again. Will the beach guests here breathe their last within a single day?
Background & info on Old
Old is based on the graphic novel Sandcastle by author Pierre Oscar Levy and illustrator Frederik Peeters. Asked why he adapted the material into a film, director M. Night Shyamalan replied, “The book gave me the opportunity to deal with a lot of my worries and fears about dying, aging and becoming a parent and leaving them behind.”
Filmed in the Dominican Republic in September 2020, Old marks the first time M. Night Shyamalan has returned to the 35mm format after shooting all of his films digitally since The Legend of Aang.
Old is also only the second film the filmmaker has adapted based on someone else’s work (rather than his own idea), following his Avatar live-action adaptation. With its mysterious premise of rapidly aging people, however, Old fit into the œuvre of his films, which are best known for their surprising twists. (ES)
