Complete Storyline and information about In the Heights
In the Heights is the feature film version of the Broadway musical of the same name and is set in the Washington Heights neighborhood on the northernmost tip of Manhattan. Here, Usnavi (Anthony Ramos) runs a bodega and takes care of his old Cuban neighbor. While he pines from afar for the pretty owner of the beauty salon next door, he dreams of winning the lottery and finally getting away from here to return to the shores of his native Dominican Republic.
Nina, on the other hand, is an old childhood friend of Usnavi’s and returns to her parents in New York after her first year of college with surprising news, when in fact they had invested all their savings in giving their daughter a better life. All the residents of the district must learn (through song and dance) what the word home really means as big decisions are about to be made.
Background & Info on In the Heights
In the Heights is based on the stage play of the same name, written and premiered in 2005 by musical creator Lin-Manuel Miranda before his hugely successful musical Hamilton (2015).
While Lin-Manuel Miranda himself played the main character Usnavi in the Off-Broadway and Broadway versions (2007 and 2008), he instead slipped into the small role of ice cream vendor Piragüero for the 2021 film version. The lead role went to Anthony Ramos, who had already appeared in Hamilton. Christopher Jackson, who had played Benny in the 2005-2008 musical, was also allowed to return as a rival soft-serve ice cream vendor.
By coincidence, the musical adaptations of In the Heights and Steven Spielberg’s remake of West Side Story coincided with the same shooting period, so both films were sometimes shot just a few blocks apart. (ES)
