Background & Info on Annette
Annette is a musical without spoken dialogues, in which only singing takes place. The project did not begin immediately as a film, but initially as a planned album by the American rock and pop duo Sparks.
Rooney Mara was originally intended to play the female
lead role in Annette, but left the project again. She was later replaced by Michelle Williams (Greatest Showman), but she also left after the film failed to progress. Rihanna was also courted for the female lead.
Eventually, Marion Cotillard was cast as the protagonist. The actress had won an Oscar for her impersonation of French chanson singer Edith Piaf in La Vie en rose. Adam Driver, too, had already given his singing best in a film in Inside Llewyn Davis.
Director Leos Carax earned his cinematic laurels before Annette with his cult film Holy Motors, among others.
Annette was filmed in Brussels, among other places, but also in the German city of Münster (in the building of LVM Versicherungen) and in the art museum of Bonn. (ES)
